Altered book free class has started today

The altered book is an art form in which artists recycle or transform existing books into new works of art through words, memorabilia, paints, draws, gesso, glue, stamps, paper, thoughts and a lot of excitement! While altering a book you will add your own work of art. You can cut niches, add pictures, images, fiber, ribbon, lace, ephemera, beads, etc. You can tear away pages, glue them, use collage, photomontage, writing or anything else you want and you also might opt to incorporate words, text, or images from the existing book, or not. There are no rules, it´s just a way to express yourself. First example

In this example I worked with a second hand Disney´s “Bambi” book and worked it as if it were a notebook. In this case, I just glued some pages and used some collage techniques by layering and adding images, papers and three-dimensional objects. I also have written a story and add over the book´s text. I thought of recreating Disney´s fantasy in my own words mixing other elements that are part of my own life. I chose not to tear pages in this case as my book wasn´t thick, but I insist you should not hesitate on tearing a book page. You can spread a thin coat of gesso to prepare a base for you to write on or you can just print , cut and glue your words to the pages. Go ahead, all you have to do is to put aside some images, papers, photos and scrapbooking embellishments and try! Another example of an altered book which is almost a notebook is my Inspired by Amélie notebook. This book was altered with the intention of serving as an idea inspiring book. For this book, I used the front and back covers from the a children´s hard cover book - Golden Book and added pages and files from other sources… For the cover, I added small pieces of patterned paper and painted everything with acrylic paint. Next, I added other layers, basically, using collage. All you have to do is take off the covers, separating them from the pages. Then you can use a crop-a-dile to make holes and insert other pages. Gather them up with whatever you want. It can be ribbon, folder rings, clips, etc.

The last example I wanted to show you is one traditional altered book where I worked the freedom-beach theme. It´s called Sunshine Bliss. In this book you can see some special techniques like shadowboxes, texture, and pop up elements.

If money weren´t an issue...

If money weren't an issue what would you do (with your time career or otherwise)? This is the new prompt at the Creative Therapy website. What I had to say about this: "I found out later in my life that I wanted to be a full time artist, maybe a theater set designer. So, if I didn´t have a great job, that pays very well, I would probably try this career" My journaling.. I dream of being just myself, A person without any obligation, A woman free to be just who she is Photo by Flavio

layouts Vale do Papel

I went to the south of Brazil for a holiday and visited the Brazilian canyons in the Aparados da Serra National Park. Enjoy my photos!

Know this - you´re like no other

At the Creative Therapy website this week we invite you to write a letter to your younger self.
What I had to say about it: "For this catalyst, I wrote a letter to myself, to the girl I once was containing a series of reflexions.
The deepest one refers to the time this girl lost trying to get social approval, pleasing the others. I told my younger self that she would only get her value when she decides that what matters is pleasing herself. I told her she is like no other..."

The circus theme - A Million Memories challenge

Whoever knows my work, knows that I get inspiration from fairytales and short stories such as Peter Pan, the Little Prince and Alice in Wonderland. I love challenging my creativity bringing these themes to tell my own stories. It makes possible for me to make fun of my own mistakes or to reflect on how time flies and life is short and full of happiness or emotions! Nowadays, nothing has inspired me as much as the circus theme. So, at A Million Memories Website, I´m challenging you to creat any project bringing this theme to decorate a page layout, an altered art, whatever you want... The most daring thing I´ve ever done

A new catalyst is up at the Creative Therapy website and the prompt this time is to tell about the most daring/scaries thing you´ve ever done. What I had to say about this:
"When I was about 12 years old, I took the blame for something I hadn’t done without knowing the consequences. I remember being in the classroom at school when one of my classmates threw a piece of chalk at the teacher. She got furious, immediately interrupted the class, and said she wouldn’t continue the class unless the guilty one admitted or someone picked the chalk up from the floor. After a long period of silence without anyone declaring themselves guilty, I stood up and picked the piece of chalk up from the floor. I can still feel the terror I felt back then when I executed such gesture. I don´t know why I did this, I just couldn´t stand being there on that situation... I just´couldn´t stand such lack of respect for our theacher.. she was so upset, however, she didn’t punish me; she actually mentioned knowing it wasn’t me who threw the piece of chalk and lectured once again about the cowardice committed. The class, however, moved on…My work for this catalyst plays with the idea of feeling fear, foolishness and horror… I worked with an amazing photo by R. Cadloff. " Now it´s your turn!
